Head's Up! Here's Everything Coming to Netflix in May 2019 (It's a Lot)

Is it just us, or is this year flying by so far? And, hey, we’re totally fine with this apparent wrinkle in the space-time continuum, because it means that the gaps between new streaming content seem delightfully smaller. That’s right; the list of everything coming to Netflix in May 2019 has been released and, for once, we barely made it through the titles we wanted to watch from last month’s list. What a time to be alive, right?

It goes without saying that in order to make room for these new movies and TV shows making their way to Netflix, the streaming service has to say goodbye to a few existing titles. Better go binge-watch all the Jaws movies, because they’ll be tossed back out to sea. If you need a good cry, hit play on the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind one more time. Check out the full list of what’s leaving here so you can play your playback accordingly.

But if you’re just dying to get to the new stuff, we’ve got you covered, fam. You’ll find that right after our top picks from the list of new arrivals.

Knock Down the House (May 1)

Hope is the thing, y’all. And it can be found in the upcoming documentary Knock Down the House. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the primary campaigns of four Democratic women challenging the establishment: Amy Vilela, Cori Bush, Paula Jean Swearengin and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. While the doc may seem obviously oriented towards those of us who lean liberal, the reality is these women prove that you don’t have to be part of the rich, white, “1-percent” to make a difference in America (and, more pointedly, your community).

Dead to Me (May 3)

If you’ve got a dark sense of humor, make sure you add Dead to Me to your Netflix list, stat. This new dramedy puts a morbidly comic spin on grieving, and it couldn’t have a better cast for it. The movie follows Christina Applegate as Jen — a new widow who doesn’t give AF about how people think she should mourn — and Linda Cardellini as Judy, a spacy free spirit Jen bonds with before realizing how much baggage Judy brings.

Wine Country (May 10)

This Netflix original movie stars Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer and Maya Rudolph, and was written, produced and directed by Poehler — reasons number one through four to watch. Reason five? The ladies let their hair down during a birthday weekend vineyard tour. So, wine. We’re in!

What/If (May 24)

To be honest, we’re a bit mystified by What/If, but that might actually be the point. The trailer for the neo-noir thriller series has certainly piqued our interest — especially considering this is Renee Zellweger’s first major TV role. Also of note? Revenge creator Mike Kelley is at the helm, so you know it’s going to be good.

When They See Us (May 31)

It seems as though Ava DuVernay may have done it again. And by “it,” we mean creating a piece of thought-provoking and even soul-changing cinema. In 2014, she did it with Selma. In 2017, she did it with the documentary 13th. Now, she’ll be challenging people’s assumptions with the new Netflix series about the Central Park Five, When They See Us.
