HBO's My Brilliant Friend season 2 trailer continues the addicting, emotional drama

The Italian drama series that caused quite the stir on HBO in 2018 is finally coming back.

My Brilliant Friend‘s season 2 trailer arrives this week with news that the premiere episode will drop on the home box office network this March 16. The first season, directed by Saverio Costanzo, adapted author Elena Ferrante‘s acclaimed first novel in her four-part series, which spans the years-long friendship of Elena and Lila. Season 2 adapts the second book, My Brilliant Friend: The Story of a New Name.

The story began with a 60-year-old Elena reflecting on her friendship with Lila, starting in 1950s Naples, in light of her mysterious disappearance. The reflection continues through their adulthood in season 2, when Lila (Gaia Girace) remains defiant in her marriage to Stefano Carracci (Giovanni Amura), believing she lost her identity when she took her husband’s name. Meanwhile, Elena (Margherita Mazzucco), a model student of academia, realizes her own unhappiness as she prepares to attend the university in Pisa. These women will reunite with another blast from the past, Nino Sarratore (Francesco Serpico), while on holiday in Ischia, a meeting that will propel them into completely different worlds.

The series adaptation received such high acclaim from critics and viewers when it debuted in November 2018, comparable to the praise Ferrante received for the original My Brilliant Friend novels. The new footage previews more poignant, moving elements of friendship, love, and purpose to explore in this complex saga.
