HBO’s ‘Winning Time’ Canceled After Two Seasons

HBO’s Winning Time has been canceled. Ahead of the show’s second season finale, the streaming giant’s X/Twitter acoount acknowledged the series’ end. “One final matchup. #WinningTime,” the account xweeted. Minutes after, Winning Time’s co-creator Max Borenstein also spoke out to confirm the series’ demise. “Not the ending that we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love. #winningtime.” Director and executive producer Salli Richardson hit Instagram to talk about the untimely end. She called the sports show her most “proud” work.

“When you give it everything you’ve got, you can have no regrets,” Richardson stated. “I hope you enjoy the last episode of @winningtimehbo I am sure I will do many more hours of TV and hopefully many features in my future, but I can say that at this moment in time I am most proud of the work we did on this masterful show. #winningtime“

Winning Time’s second season debuted on HBO in August 2023. The series raked in 629,000 viewers across Max. However, the number was a glaringly obvious dropoff from their season 1 debut, raking in 901,000.

HBO’s sports series was based on Jeff Pearlman’s book, Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. For the second season, the show picked up after the 1980 NBA Finals through 1984. The final episode then culminates in the first professional match between the Lakers’ Magic Johnson and Boston Celtics’ Larry Bird.

Winning Time starred Solomon Hughes, Adrien Brody, Quincy Isaiah, Sean Patrick Small, John C. Reilly, Jason Clarke, Jason Segel, Gabby Hoffman, Hadley Robinson, and DeVaugh Nixon.
