Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, The Boy and The Heron, has announced the voice cast for its English dub, led by Christian Bale, Florence Pugh, and Robert Pattinson. It will see a wide theatrical release on December 8th alongside the original Japanese language version. Update: Watch the English dub trailer below.

Other stars include Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe, Gemma Chan, Dave Bautista, and Karen Fukuhara, with additional cast members Luca Padovan, Mamoudou Athie, Tony Revolori, and Dan Stevens. GKIDS cast and produced the English version in close consultation with Studio Ghibli, and the script adaptation was written by Stephanie Sheh. The English language dub was produced in accordance with the SAG-AFTRA Foreign Dubbing Agreement.

In our review of The Boy and The Heron from this year’s New York Film Festival, Senior Staff Writer Clint Worthington described it as a “magnificent final flourish that folds together many of the thematic and aesthetic threads [Miyazaki has] explored through his career: man’s relationship to nature, the majesty of flight, the twin pulls of love and loss.”

The film marks Miyazaki’s first feature in a decade after 2013’s The Wind Rises. Studio Ghibli’s last film was the 2020 CG movie Earwig and the Witch, directed by Hayao’s son Goro Miyazaki.
