‘Hawkeye’ Episode 3 Was Full of ‘Daredevil’ Easter Eggs
Episode three of Marvel Studios' newest Disney+ series, Hawkeye, dropped this week. It was the most action-packed installment yet, featuring a lengthy car chase sequence as well as some further development of the mentor/rookie relationship between Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). And because this is a Marvel show, it also included a bunch of subtle winks to the comics and wider MCU, which a new video on the Emergency Awesome channel rounded up.
Some of them were pretty on-the-nose, including the episode title "Echoes," which was both an oblique reference to the impact that Clint Barton's time as the Ronin continues to have on the MCU, and a more direct nod to the fact that Maya Lopez's superhero name in the comics is Echo. And speaking of Maya, this episode pretty heavily implied that her "Uncle" is going to turn out to be Wilson Fisk, aka Daredevil's nemesis, the Kingpin, so we can probably expect Vincent D'Onofrio from the Netflix Daredevil series to show up before the end of the season.
There were also several mentions of dragons in "Echoes," first in the conversation between Maya and her father. In that scene, Maya's dad says that dragons live in another world: it was a metaphor for Maya's own journey as a deaf woman learning to adapt in a hearing world, but could just as easily be interpreted as a reference to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, where dragons literally come from a different dimension.
There was another callback to Hawkeye's friendship with Black Widow, when he told Maya that she "killed" Ronin, referring to the events of Avengers: Endgame, where Natasha brought Clint back into the fold after the five year time jump.
Viewers might also have wondered why such a big deal was made of Maya owning a Dodge Challenger which then got wrecked; in the comics, this was Black Widow's car, which Hawkeye was a huge admirer of. And as has become something of a tradition in screen adaptations of the Marvel comics, this episode pokes some fun at the classic Hawkeye costume, depicted here in Kate's hastily drawn napkin sketch.
