Having 2 'Sisters' restaurants in downtown Rockford wasn't so confusing until one closed

ROCKFORD — One Sisters is closed while another Sisters a few blocks away is still in business.

Hard to follow? You know it, brother!

The confusion started earlier this month after the Register Star reported that Sister’s on Main, 307 S. Main St., a restaurant specializing in burgers, sandwiches, wraps and breakfast throughout the day, shut down after three years in business.

Media reports had an almost immediate impact on foot traffic at Sisters Thai Cafe, 514 E. State St., according to server Maria Campos.

“We usually have a full restaurant during the lunch hour and we noticed during the last couple of weeks that we’ve been drawing fewer and fewer people,” Campos said. “We had people calling us asking if we were closed or when we were closing. I think a lot of people were worried that we had closed.”

Sister's Thai Cafe turned to Facebook to set the record straight:

"We would like you to please know that we are still OPEN for business and operating our normal hours, we have been getting a lot of calls and misunderstanding regarding closing or if we are closed, we are Sisters Thai Cafe on 514 East State Street in downtown Rockford NOT Sisters Cafe on North Main that has unfortunately closed."

Sisters Thai Cafe, which specializes in authentic Thai and Laos dishes, opened in 2014 and was originally located at the Clock Tower Resort. After the resort was condemned and demolished, Sisters moved to downtown Rockford, where it has been operating for the past five years while building a loyal customer base

Rockford Mayor Tom McNamara is among the regular customers.

“He comes in here all of the time,” Campos said. “He always gets the Orange Chicken when he comes in for lunch. Sometimes he gets takeout for dinner.”

Sisters seats up to 100 customers and recently opened its patio for the summer.

The restaurant, which employs seven servers and three kitchen staff, is in business for the long haul, Campos said.

“I feel that this restaurant brings a different culture into the city,” Campos said. “It’s a very family-oriented atmosphere. We’re not going anywhere any time soon.”
