‘A Haunting in Venice’ Scares Up Top Spot at U.K., Ireland Box Office

Disney’s Hercule Poirot film “A Haunting in Venice” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £2.1 million ($2.7 million), according to numbers released by Comscore.

In its second weekend, in second place, Warner Bros.’ “The Nun II” collected £1.1 million for a total of £3.8 million.

In its third weekend, in third place, Sony’s “The Equalizer 3” took in £874,709 for a total of £6.2 million.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Bollywood blockbuster “Jawan,” distributed by Yash Raj Films, earned £480,243 in its second weekend for a total of £2.3 million.

Rounding off the top five was Warner Bros.’ “Barbie,” which grossed £456,329 in its ninth weekend for a mighty total of £94.5 million. The film is the highest grosser of the year and remains in seventh position on the territory’s all time chart, within nudging distance of “Spectre” (£95.2 million). “Barbie” is likely to surpass or at least come within martini-shaking distance of James Bond as for one week only, starting Sept. 22, it is releasing in the Imax format with new post-credits footage across more than 25 locations.

While there were no other debuts in the top 10, Studiocanal’s arthouse hit “Past Lives” collected £374,412 in sixth place in its second weekend for a total of £1.2 million and Universal’s “Oppenheimer” £323,130 in seventh place in its ninth weekend for a total of £57.1 million.

Angel’s “Sound of Freedom,” which emerged as a big hit Stateside, continues to make steady progress this side of the pond, earning £184,797 in ninth place in its third weekend for a total of £1.7 million.

The upcoming weekend the wide releases are Black Bear’s “Dumb Money,” starring Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D’Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley and Seth Rogen; Lionsgate’s “Expend4bles,” starring Jason Statham, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, Randy Couture, Jacob Scipio, Levy Tran, with Andy Garcia and Sylvester Stallone; and Signature’s animation “The Canterville Ghost,” with the voices of Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Freddie Highmore, Imelda Staunton and Toby Jones, all of which are opening across more than 300 locations.

Opening across more than 100 locations each are Cosmic Cat’s Edinburgh-winning Scottish animation “A Cat Called Dom” and Universal’s thriller “The Lesson,” starring Richard E. Grant, Julie Delpy and Daryl McCormack. In addition, A24 is releasing a remastered version of Jonathan Demme’s landmark 1984 Talking Heads documentary “Stop Making Sense” across more than 100 locations.
