Harvey Weinstein guilty: Read what Jessica Mann, Miriam Haleyi say he did in their own words

NEW YORK — A jury found Harvey Weinstein guilty Monday of sexually assaulting one woman and raping another, the culmination of a nearly two-month court case that marks a watershed moment in the #MeToo movement.

Although the once-powerful Hollywood producer was acquitted of three charges – including two of predatory sexual assault, which can carry a life sentence – he still could face up to 25 years in prison for his first-degree criminal sexual act conviction involving production assistant Miriam Haleyi, 42, and up to four years behind bars for the third-degree rape of Jessica Mann, 34.

On Monday, Weinstein was immediately handcuffed and taken into custody; he is to be taken to a medical facility at the request of his lawyers. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 11.

Here are the accounts shared by Haleyi and Mann when they took the stand. Warning: Both testimonies contain graphic depictions of sexual assault.

Haleyi, who was a production assistant on the Weinstein-produced "Project Runway," repeatedly broke down crying when she took the stand Jan. 27, recounting the incident that led to the first-degree criminal sexual act conviction.

In July 2006, Weinstein arranged for a car to pick up Haleyi and bring her to his Soho apartment, for what she thought was a meeting to discuss work on his productions.

But soon after meeting him there, "he kind of came towards me and lunged at me,” Haleyi testified. “I got up from the sofa and said, ‘Oh, no, no, no.’”

Weinstein proceeded to back her into a bedroom, where he pushed her onto a bed and forced oral sex on her.

“I rejected him but he insisted,” Haleyi said through tears. “Every time I tried to get off the bed he would push me back and hold me down. At that point I started realizing what was actually happening.”

“He forced himself on me orally," she continued. "I was on my period. I had a tampon on in there. I was mortified. I was just crying, ‘No!’ I kept trying to tell him, ‘No, don’t go there.’ I was in such shock that I just checked out.”

Weinstein was also charged with third-degree rape of Mann, a Los Angeles-based hairdresser and aspiring actress who says she was in a "real," but also "very degrading" and "controlling" relationship with Weinstein when he raped her in New York in March 2013.

Mann was preparing for a breakfast meeting at her Midtown hotel when Weinstein showed up unannounced and told her he was checking into a room. Mann had been trying to break off the relationship around that time and confronted him in the lobby, where he told her to go to his room.

“He got very mad at me for trying to speak up, and I was saying to the people (at the front desk), ‘We don’t need the room!’" Mann testified on January 31. “He pulled me to the side and said, ‘Don’t embarrass me!' And I got really quiet. He put his arm on me and told me to go to the room, and I thought, ‘At least I can yell at him in private.’ And then in the room, I started arguing with him.”

There, Mann said Weinstein “was like a drill sergeant: sharp, angry” as he commanded her to disrobe.

“He comes toward me and starts trying to force me to undress,” Mann continued tearfully. “I was panicked, because my worst nightmare was about to happen. I was very angry inside and very scared.” At that point, “I gave up. Once I was naked and on the bed, he came out (of the bathroom) naked and got on top of me.”

After the rape, Mann said she went to the bathroom, where she saw a needle Weinstein used in the trash can. She examined the name on its packaging so she could look it up later.

“I don't remember the medical term (on the label), but when I Googled it, it basically implied (erectile dysfunction medication) " Mann said, sobbing.

Mann testified that Weinstein violently raped her again later that year in a Los Angeles hotel room after she told him she had a boyfriend. She continued to have a friendly email relationship with the fallen mogul for years after, which the defense attempted to use against Mann: showing the court dozens of messages from Mann to Weinstein saying "I love you" and calling him "a blessing in my life."

But jurors ultimately sided with Mann, who testified that her dynamic with Weinstein was "complicated" and rooted in fear. She described using "flattery" in emails as a way of propping up his "fragile" ego.

"It's what made me feel safe – there were lots of dynamics in the relationship," Mann said. "I wanted to be perceived as innocent and naive and not a threat. I didn’t want to trigger his anger."
