As Harry Styles gears up to release his debut solo album, he’s in a very good position with not only famous friends but famous fans to support this journey.

Joining BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show, host Nick Grimshaw surprised the One Direction member with interview questions from Ed Sheeran, Coldplay‘s Chris Martin, the Rolling StonesRonnie Wood, Rita Ora and Styles’ own mother, Anne Twist. The result was a mix of goofy and seriousness, all of which Styles handled like a champ.

The first of the video questions came from Martin, who pretended to be a super fan and asked if he could run Styles’ fan club. In response, the pop star offered some constructive criticism before accepting his application.

“I’d say that he has to focus on what he’d like to do at the fan club,” Styles told Grimshaw. “He said he’d clean everything — it makes him look like he’s kind of not focused. I think he needs to say, I want to do this job and I think I can do it. But, yeah, yes Chris Martin.”

Sheeran, on the other hand, played the serious reporter with his questions, asking Styles, “What was the process of this album? How many songs did you write, where did you make it and how long have you been making it for and did you enjoy making it?”

Styles replied explaining he had worked on the album for just three weeks last year before stopping for about five months to film his forthcoming theatrical debut, the Christopher Nolan-direct Dunkirk. He said he returned from that in July and continued to work on the self-titled album until the end of the year, writing about 30 full songs over that time.

As for Styles mother, Twist, she too wanted to pose a thoughtful question to her son and asked him to explain his favorite part of creating this album aside from performing and recording it, to which he replied that would be the writing. He explained, this for this album he and his co-writers set to to create something they really wanted to listen to themselves.

“If you put out something that you don’t stand behind and really love, if it doesn’t go well then you can regret not doing something that you really wanted to do,” he said. “Whereas if nothing happens with it, I love it.”
