A new Harry Potter television series is in the works at Max.

The series will be a faithful adaptation of the book series featuring an entirely new cast. Each season will be tied to a specific book in the series, meaning the series will run seven seasons.

“Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO & Max Content, in a statement.

Rowling’s transphobia has been a barrier to entry for some (including for Daniel Radcliffe, who played her series’ titular character in the original movies), but Harry Potter largely remains a booming, beloved franchise.

The latest spin-off film Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore hit theaters last year, following 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. A stage play called Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in 2016 and is currently showing on Broadway.

The upcoming Harry Potter TV series was one of several announcements made Wednesday by Warner Bros. Discovery as they unveiled their plans for their rebranded streaming service, Max (formerly known as HBO Max).
