Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce haven’t given his Kansas City Chiefs teammate Harrison Butker any energy after his Benedictine College commencement address fired up the internet. The kicker, who is a conservative Catholic, got Swifties all heated when he quoted a lyric from her 2022 single, “Bejeweled,” during his misogynistic speech where he offended women, the LGBTQ+ community, and President Joe Biden.

Butker seems to be a man with many opinions, and he had something to say about Swift and Kelce’s relationship that appeared to be innocent enough just two months ago, but was he trying to say more now that we’ve heard his thoughts on women and marriage? “I hope they get married and start a family,” he shared with EWTN’s News in Depth in March. At the time, it was a sweet and supportive message for a teammate’s relationship, but now it feels like he’s downplaying her power by saying she needs to be put in her “homemaker” place. If that’s what she chooses to do, we wholeheartedly support it, but no one should dictate what path a woman takes in life.

He had kind things to say about Swift after meeting her at the team’s New Year’s Eve party, describing her as “humble” and gracious.” Butker added, “I was nervous to meet Taylor Swift, it’s Taylor Swift. But it was a great experience, and I can’t say enough great things about her.” Yet just a few months later, he weaponized her lyrics against her by quoting, “familiarity breeds contempt” in his May 11 speech. The female graduates in the audience had to listen to him downplay their four-year educational achievements by pandering to gender stereotypes.

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” he said to the graduates. “I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.” Butker even encouraged to “fight against […] cultural emasculation” and “be unapologetic in your masculinity.”

That doesn’t really sound like anything Swift would stand for, and Kelce probably didn’t appreciate that Butker referred to the billionaire pop star as “my teammate’s girlfriend.” Butker and his wife have a right to believe what they want and choose their family dynamic, but forcing those beliefs on a day of celebration isn’t the right time or place. Butker’s words, past and present, may continue to haunt him on and off the field.
