Hispanic Heritage Month runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, and Cincinnati is celebrating accordingly, with Latin-inspired celebrations bringing the fiesta energy to the Queen City.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Hispanic Heritage Month started under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 and was enacted into federal law 20 years later in 1988. The Sept. 15 start date honors the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Now, the observation celebrates the contributions of the country’s largest minority group, the more than 60 million Hispanic Americans and Latin-identifying people who make up part of the U.S. population.

Cincinnati's Hispanic population is growing rapidly

Cincinnati's Hispanic population is young and is growing each year, Alfonso Cornejo, president of the Hispanic Chamber of Cincinnati, said.

A 2022 report presented by the chamber indicates the city's population of Hispanic residents has increased by approximately 48.5% over the past decade, from 49,618 individuals in 2010 to 73,707 in 2020.

Data compiled by Apoyo Latino, the Greater Cincinnati Latino Coalition, states almost half of that population is under the age of 18.
