Adam Sandler may be revisiting one of his most beloved comedies almost 30 years later.

The “Spaceman” and “Uncut Gems” star is said to have developed a script for “Happy Gilmore 2,” a sequel to his iconic 1996 film. Original actor Christopher McDonald said during Audacy radio show “92.3 The Fan” that he saw a draft of the script.

“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re going to love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.'”

McDonald aded, “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t want to be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Sandler co-wrote the first movie which was directed by Dennis Dugan. Sandler portrayed the titular hockey player who discovers a knack for golf and embarks on a professional career as an underdog (fictional) sports legend. Happy (Sandler) is pitted against McDonald’s villainous golf pro Shooter McGavin on the circuit. Julie Bowen and late actor Carl Weathers co-starred in the Universal film that grossed almost $40 million at the box office against a $12 million budget.

Aside from turning back time to his ’90s comedy era, Sandler is set to star in Josh Safdie’s solo feature directorial debut, a drama centered within the world of sports memorabilia. Megan Thee Stallion was additionally tied to the project.

Sandler said of his Safide collaborations that “Uncut Gems” co-directors Josh and Benny Safdie are “incredible filmmakers” that Sandler “would die to work with” again. Ahead of the yet-untitled sports feature, Sandler teamed up with the Safdies for a six-minute short film in 2020. Josh Safdie is also confirmed to helm Sandler’s upcoming Netflix stand-up comedy special as a follow-up to Emmy-nominated 2018 special “100% Fresh.”

Happy Madison mega-producer Sandler has a Netflix deal which has been extended twice. Sandler has produced films like “Leo,” “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,” “Hustle,” and two “Murder Mystery” movies for the streamer.
