Sept. 24 would have been Phil Hartman’s 69th birthday. The actor and comedian — beloved by fans of Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons, NewsRadio and more — was killed on May 29, 1998 by his wife Brynn, who then took her own life.

Trying to choose Hartman’s best moments on screen would be a fool’s errand because the man was simply so good in everything he did. Hartman could squeeze a laugh out of even the weakest SNL sketches, which is why his nickname on set was the Glue. So rather than share an inevitably incomplete “best-of” list, today we look back on five SNL sketches that exemplify Hartman’s extraordinary talent. Colon Blow (Original airdate: Nov. 11, 1989)

The Sinatra Group (Original airdate: Feb. 23, 1991)

Bill Clinton/McDonald’s cold open (Original airdate: Dec. 5, 1992)

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer: Zanderville City Council (Original air date: March 14, 1992)

Cooking with the Anal Retentive Chef (Original air date: April 1, 1989)

Happy birthday, Phil. We’ll never forget you.
