On Wednesday’s premiere episode of “Survivor 45,” emotions ran the gamut on a disheveled Lulu tribe. After a panic attack at the reward challenge from Brandon Donlon and the skepticism and pessimism around camp from Emily Flippen, fan-from-the-couch Hannah Rose had decided the game was much harder in real life than she ever expected … and she wanted out. At the first Tribal Council of the season, Hannah convinced her tribe mates to honor her wishes to quit and they verbally voted her out of the game. Read on for Hannah’s “Survivor 45” exit interview from the end of the episode.

The first warning sign for Hannah that she might be in over her head was after the reward challenge where she witnessed Brandon struggle climbing a rope ladder and then have to remain behind for a medical evaluation following his panic attack. It was a glimpse into how much tougher the game was and would continue to be than she imagined. From there, she quickly began to assess her own struggles with the sweat, bugs, nicotine withdrawal and feeling “hangry.” At the end of the episode she explained, “I’ve read so many articles and books and I’ve researched this and nothing can prepare you for what it’s like to be completely at zero. I have nothing in the tank.”

Hannah first mentioned her desire to quit in front of Brandon after they lost the immunity challenge and were faced with voting someone out. Hannah told him that it was clear the tribe intended to vote for Emily, but that she could see how badly everyone else wanted to stay to play compared to how she wanted to leave. Later at TC, Hannah pitched her case in front of Jeff Probst and the entire tribe that all she could think about while they were talking about the game was what she wanted to eat. Though Sabiyah Broderick was hoping Hannah could stick it out a few more days so that they could keep their tribe strong, Hannah insisted that she’d much rather watch the game “unfold from the comfort of [her] own home.”

Knowing how Jeff and fans have reacted to quitters in past seasons, Hannah acknowledged what that could mean for her once the show aired. “I feel fear and anticipation that the world is going to hate me,” she said. “Here I am in front of millions of people being like ‘I have to bow out.'”

Laced in that admission was a true fan’s shame that her dream wasn’t what he pictured it would be, but ultimately it gave her a glimpse into the reality of how brutal the game can actually be. She concluded with a thought of admiration, saying, “I have so much more respect for every single ‘Survivor’ player that has ever played.”
