Jennifer Lopez's Netflix assassin thriller The Mother has added several familiar faces to its cast.

The thriller from Mulan director Niki Caro casts J-Lo as a retired assassin who re-emerges from hiding to protect her daughter (Lucy Paez) from a crew of dangerous men.

Among those dangerous men will be The Handmaid's Tale and American Horror Story star Joseph Fiennes as well as Gael Garcia Bernal (Old and Mozart in the Jungle).

Power's Omari Hardwick and Sound of Metal star Paul Raci have been cast as two federal agents who become allies for Lopez's quest to outrun her enemies.

The Mother is the first in a multi-movie deal announced between Netflix and Lopez's production company Nuyorican Productions, via Variety. Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green is writing the script.

The film marks a return for Lopez to the thriller genre following box office hits such as Enough, Out of Sight and The Boy Next Door earlier in her career.

She most recently earned Critics Choice Movie Award, Independent Spirit and Golden Globe nominations for the heist movie Hustlers as the ringleader of a crew of exotic dancers robbing their wealthy male clients.

Next up for J-Lo on the movie front is romantic comedy Marry Me, where she will be paired with Loki actor Owen Wilson.

The film – which also stars Game of Thrones veteran John Bradley, comedian Sarah Silverman and The Good Place's Jameela Jamil – depicts Lopez as a popstar who decides to accept a spur-of-the-moment marriage proposal from a fan (Wilson) after discovering her boyfriend had cheated on her.

Marry Me will be released in cinemas on February 11, 2022.
