MASSILLON — Operations are back to normal at a downtown hotel after a fire started inside a commercial dryer.

City firefighters were called the Hampton Inn at 44 First St. SW just before 10 a.m. Wednesday as smoke began to fill the main floor.

Assistant Chief Pat Rhodes said a fire began inside of the dryer used by hotel personnel. Crews used a water extinguisher to put out the smoldering fire, which was contained to the dryer, he added.

Hotel guests evacuated the high-rise building when the alarm sounded, he said, but were able to return to their rooms.

Firefighters ventilated the first floor to help remove the smoke and a professional cleaning crew was already on the scene to clean up the laundry room, Rhodes added.

No one was injured in the incident.
