A restaurant chain known for letting customers customize their meals now has its first location in the Des Moines metro. Tavern Grill debuted at Jordan Creek Town Center in mid-August, bringing a roster of burgers, pizza and salads.

The Edina, Minnesota-based American-style restaurant chain opened near the mall’s theater entrance.

The idea is to let the customer decide what toppings to add to a dish. Pads that include all possible ingredients are at the table for a patron to check off a litany of cheeses, veggies, and proteins, which results in thousands of flavor combinations.

The restaurant near the food court and Century 20 Theatres offers a patio, TVs in the bar area, and a lot of booth seating.

Start with appetizers such as an artichoke and crab dip with soft grilled bread or house-made cheese curds served with ranch and sriracha ranch or try Bang Bang shrimp or chicken strips coated in a sesame breading.

The menu gets interesting when diners can choose their toppings for those salads, burgers or pizzas. Should a patron be in the mood to go with a composed dish, Tavern Grill has those items as well. For pizzas, try the Tavern brie with a brie spread topped with shaved prosciutto ham, fire-roasted artichoke, roasted tomato, balsamic red onion jam, and basil chiffonade, or a barbecue chicken with a bourbon red barbecue sauce, smoked Gouda and pulled chicken breast.

Burgers include the Widowmaker with toppings such as melted cheddar, onion strings, jalapeños, sautéed mushrooms and caramelized onions, while a breakfast burger comes with smoked bacon, a fried egg and cheddar.

The menu doesn’t stop there. A French dip, Southern fried chicken, a Reuben, and fish tacos are options, as are pastas such as chicken fettucine alfredo or spaghetti. A short list of entrees includes spicy ginger seared tuna, a grilled scallops skewer, New Orleans shrimp Tchoupitoulas, and a lemon beurre blanc chicken.
