Halloween weather: What's up for ghoulish night of family fun? Watch scary video

TRI-CITIES — Happy Halloween! The weather is looking a little iffy for Trick-or-Treating. I reached out to the National Weather Service out of Wakefield for tonight's forecast.

Meteorologist Alec Butner predicts mid-evening there is a 20 to 30% chance of light rain or sprinkle. "It will be cloudy, and temperatures will fall into the mid to lower 40s by Trick-or-Treat time," Butner said.

It's not the most favorable conditions for little ones to go door to door for free candy. Rainy, cloudy nights make it hard for motorists to see pedestrians, witches, zombies, princesses, dinosaurs, superheroes, etc. Flashlights or glow sticks will help light trick-or-treating routes.

If it does drizzle, parents can shield wee ones with umbrellas. Golf umbrellas are ideal since they are quite a bit larger. As a child, I did not let rain, sleet or snow prevent me from hoping to score Twizzlers, candy bars, stickers and tattoos. If it was cold, I would wear layers of clothing under my costume to keep warm.

Halloween: Fun events for families

Tonight, The Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights will entertain families rain or shine from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The free event includes s'mores by campfire, hayrides, a trunk-or-treat and food. According to Frank Lundie, 6,000 children attended last year.

On the Trunk or Treat at The Heights Facebook event post, the church commented, "Elements are planned for both outside and inside, so if it rains, we'll move more of it indoors."

The Colonial Heights Recreation and Parks Department will host a Halloween Movie Night from 6 - 9 p.m. in the Community Room at the Colonial Heights Community Center. All ages are welcome. Guests can munch on candy while they watch family-friendly, non-scary Disney movies. Visit colonialheightsva.gov to register to attend.

From 9 p.m. - 2 a.m. adults are invited to the Spooktacular Halloween Party at Maria’s After Hour in Petersburg. Enjoy a night of frightful fun with food and drink specials, a live DJ, a costume contest and cash prizes. Visit Maria's Old Town 21 Ristorante Italiano on Facebook for more information.
