Halloween parties: Beaches will be rocking with big shows in Ocean City, Dewey and more

Halloween may mean tricks and treats for children, but it also equates to big business at beach bars and restaurants which host costume-themed events for adults.

A big Halloween bash and more at Dewey Beach's Rusty Rudder

In Dewey Beach, the Rusty Rudder will host its annual season-closing bash (which doubles as a costume party) at 9 p.m. on, Saturday, Oct. 28. Music will be provided by the Rudder’s longtime house band Love Seed Mama Jump, which celebrated its 32nd anniversary this year.

The Rudder will reopen, however, for a pair of holiday events on two of the biggest nights of the year. Local country act Triple Rail Turn will play at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22, which is the night before Thanksgiving (and which is referred to by those in the nightclub industry as “Turkey Eve”).

On Sunday, Dec. 31, the Rudder’s New Year’s Eve shindig will feature sets by Stealing Savannah, the Gab Cinque Band, and of course, Love Seed Mama Jump.

Last week in this column we mentioned that Dewey’s seasonal Bottle & Cork nightclub, which closed last month, had announced its first concert of 2024 — a May 23 appearance by country star Nate Smith. A Wednesday, Oct. 18, pre-sale moved 535 tickets in the first eight hours. All 1,200 tickets were gone shortly after the rest went on sale to the general public Friday, Oct. 20.

Elsewhere in Dewey, the Nalu Surf Bar & Grill will host its 16th annual season-closing party at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28. Expect to see a lot of folks sporting headbands and legwarmers, as the colorfully-clothed duo Decade 80 will bring its high-energy retro show to the stage. (Note that Nalu’s sister location in downtown Rehoboth Beach remains open year-round.)

Seawitch and much more will rock Rehoboth Beach

Local indie-rock act Braxton Hicks will play original music from its "Extraordinary Girl" CD at the Dogfish Head brewpub in downtown Rehoboth Beach at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.

Speaking of downtown Rehoboth, the city’s 33rd annual Sea Witch Festival will attract thousands of Halloween-minded visitors Friday through Sunday, Oct. 27-29.

And if meteorologists’ predictions of much warmer-than-usual weekend weather are correct, the event will likely be even bigger than usual. City officials remind attendees that Rehoboth Avenue will be closed to all motorists from 2 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday as it is the route of the annual parade. (As the roadway needs to remain cleared, early birds will instead have to park their vehicles on side streets.) The parade will begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m.

Downtown Rehoboth’s Dogfish Head brewpub will have costumed revelry after dark Saturday as indie-rock act Braxton Hicks plays original music from its “Extraordinary Girl” CD at 9 p.m. Dogfish also announced that it will unveil a new Halloween-themed beer Saturday that will be available on tap and also in cans.

At Ocean City's Seacrets, double the Halloween party fun

Local rock favorite Full Circle will play at Seacrets in Ocean City at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28 to kick off the annual Haunted Halloween Party & Costume Contest.
