Hailey Bieber reveals she had procedure to repair a hole in her heart after her stroke

Now that Hailey Bieber is recovering from her "life-altering" medical scare, she is ready to open up. The 25-year-old supermodel posted a video Wednesday detailing the events that landed her in a Los Angeles hospital last month, and the many medical tests that ensued.

Bieber shared a short note on her Instagram story back in March, writing, "This was definitely one of the scariest moments I've ever been through. I'm home now and doing well."

In her latest video, Bieber once again recounts the "normal day" at breakfast with husband Justin Bieber when she started feeling a "weird sensation" travel from her shoulder to her fingertips. She then lost the ability to form words, and the right side of her face drooped.

"Immediately, I thought I was having a stroke. [Justin] thought I was having a stroke," Bieber said in the video. "I had so many things running through my head: 'I'm having a stroke. I'm really scared. I don't know what's going on. I don't know why this is happening. Am I gonna have permanent issues from this?'"

By the time Bieber arrived at the hospital, her symptoms had subsided. The lack of oxygen to a part of her brain suggested that she had suffered a transient ischemic attack (TIA), defined by the Mayo Clinic as "a temporary period of symptoms similar to those of a stroke" that "can serve as both a warning of a future stroke and an opportunity to prevent it."

Bieber said her doctors explained that the clot likely formed from a "perfect storm" of recent events. She had just started taking birth control pills without talking to her doctor, she recently had COVID, and she had reclined for the entirety of her long flights to and from Paris.

The cause for the clot traveling to Bieber's brain remained undetected until she had a transcranial doppler test. It found that she had a hole between her heart's right and left atrium, or a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Bieber underwent a PFO closure procedure to close the 12- to 13-millimeter PFO that allowed the blood clot to escape to her brain.

"It went very smoothly. I'm recovering really well, really fast," Bieber said. "I feel really relieved that we were able to figure everything out, that we were able to get it closed, that I will be able to just move on from this really scary situation and just live my life."

Bieber noted that the prescribed blood thinners worsened her anxiety. She worried that she would suffer another TIA before the closure procedure and often felt tingling in her fingers and hands. However, after talking to her doctors, she was prescribed a different dose that diminished these side effects.

"I feel very lucky to have had the health-care resources and family support to be able to deal with this as quickly as I did," she added in a written note at the end of the video. "I wanted to make this video to share more info and a few resources in the video description below to turn to if you have gone or are going through something similar."
