During her Tuesday night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Academy Award-nominated actress-turned-singer Hailee Steinfeld revealed the crazy way she got signed to Republic Records.

During the interview — promoting her new movie The Edge of Seventeen — the 19-year-old said she scored the record deal thanks to a chance meeting… and her mom.

“I went to a dinner in New York City … and the person that was to my mom’s right was a man named Charlie Walk, and we had no idea who he was,” Steinfeld told Kimmel. “We got to talking, and within 20 minutes he had headphones in and he was listening to music that I had done on my own … and he signed me!” she added.

Steinfeld added: “If it wasn’t for [my mom], it wouldn’t have happened.”
