Hailee Steinfeld reveals new song title 'Wrong Direction' — and fans think it's about Niall Horan

Hailee Steinfeld revealed this weekend that she will release a song titled “Wrong Direction” on Wednesday, and fans are already speculating it’s about her ex, former One Direction member Niall Horan.

The singer and actress posted the words “Wrong direction” along with the date Jan. 1 on Instagram Sunday, leading fans to think she is gearing up to drop her first single since September’s “Afterlife.”

Steinfeld also shared a photo of herself with wet hair, seemingly in a bathtub, gazing straight into the camera with the caption: “1/1.” The image is likely a still from a music video for “Wrong Direction,” especially since both posts tease a New Year’s Day release.

Steinfeld and Horan split a year ago after first being linked together in February 2018, although they never publicly confirmed the relationship. Steinfeld also did not confirm what “Wrong Direction” will be about.

She shared on her Instagram Story over the weekend that she was “thankful for all the lessons, the love, the heartbreak, & the memories” in 2019. Given the Jan. 1 release, coupled with the cleansing imagery Steinfeld posted yesterday, “Wrong Direction” could be an emotional song about reflecting, relationships, and new beginnings — and her breakup with Horan certainly fits into such a narrative.

Fans are guessing as much, with many on Twitter and Instagram already saying “Wrong Direction” will be a breakup song. “hailee couldve named that song ANYTHING and she named it the one thing that makes us know it’s niall. what did he DO,” one Twitter user commented.

Over the weekend, Steinfeld also posted what seemed to be a video from a table read for Dickinson to her Instagram Story. She stars in the popular Apple TV+ series based on poet Emily Dickinson’s early life. The show is set to return for a second season, and production is already reportedly underway.
