“Hadestown” is coming home.

The stage production that began in Vermont in 2006 before going on 13 years later to extraordinary Tony Award-winning success on Broadway will open the Flynn’s 2024-25 season of touring Broadway shows.

“Hadestown” will be staged Tuesday, Oct. 15, and Wednesday, Oct. 16, at the Burlington performing-arts center. That will be the first full Vermont staging of the musical based on the Orpheus myth since its statewide tour in 2007.

The musical’s creator, Addison County native and singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell, teased the production’s return to Vermont in a video the Flynn shared last week prior to the April 15 announcement of the venue’s Broadway season. Mitchell portrayed Eurydice in those Vermont productions of “Hadestown.”

“I can remember going to the Flynn theater as a kid. I saw a lot of shows at the Flynn long before I got a chance to perform on that stage,” Mitchell says in the video. “I’m so grateful that ‘Hadestown’ is going to be performed on that stage.”

Mitchell also spoke of the influence Vermont had on the musical that would go on to win eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Musical and Mitchell’s Best Original Score. The production continues to draw large audiences at the Walter Kerr Theatre in Manhattan, five years after it opened there.

“It feels so incredible to be bringing this show home to the place of its birth,” Mitchell says in the video.

“In Vermont we’re, like, living really close to nature and the seasons,” according to Mitchell. “There’s something about those physical necessities that I think made its way certainly into ‘Hadestown’ – the rivers and the trees and the birds that Orpheus sings about, and the food and the firewood that Eurydice is searching for − all of those things felt very real to me living in Vermont.”

To be able to bring the touring Broadway version of “Hadestown” back to Vermont, Mitchell says in the video, “feels very exciting and kind of like a miracle.”
