In 2016, Gypsy Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection to the death of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard.

She was sentenced to 10 years in prison and was released on parole on Thursday, December 28 after serving 85% of her 10-year sentence. Her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, was also involved in the murder, as investigators claim Gypsy convinced him to stab her mother to death in 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison, without parole.

Following her prison release, the 2017 MAX documentary, 'Mommy Dead and Dearest' has skyrocketed in views and popularity.

'Mommy Dead and Dearest' was released in 2017, one year after Gypsy Rose was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The hit documentary told the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, as well as the events leading up to the murder, including how Dee Dee abused Gypsy Rose her entire life.

After Gypsy Rose served 85% of her 10-year sentence, and after she was released on Thursday, December 28, people began watching the 2017 documentary all over again.

According to IMDb, on Thursday, December 28, after Gypsy Rose's release from prison, 'Mommy Dead and Dearest' went up from 3,835th place to 2,050th place on the popularity scale.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard Released From Prison

Dee Dee Blanchard Used Gypsy Rose As Disable Child Poster

When in court during trial, Gypsy Rose Blanchard testified that her mother abused her for years as she forced her to use a wheelchair and undergo unnecessary medical tests. Dee Dee used her daughter as a disabled child poster just to collect charitable donations, including from Make-A-Wish and The Walt Disney Company.

In an interview shown during the 2017 HBO documentary 'Mommy Dead and Dearest,' Gypsy Rose said her mother told her she had “asthma, epilepsy, hearing impaired, vision impaired, needed a feeding tube, paralyzed from the waist down, retardation, among other things.”

According to medical records, Dee Dee brought Gypsy to local hospitals over 100 times between 2005 and 2014.

Dee Dee physically abused Gypsy as well, including one time when Dee Dee handcuffed her daughter to her bed for two weeks. "My mom had convinced a lawyer to draw up some paper that I as incompetent so if I were to go to the police, they would look at these papers [and not believe me]," she explained in the interview shown in the 2017 documentary.

The public believes that Gypsy Blanchard was a victim of Munchausen by proxy, which is a rare form of abuse in which a guardian fakes illnesses in a child for attention and sympathy, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
