Gypsy Rose Blanchard-Anderson’s husband, Ryan Scott Anderson, is opening up about how he proposed with a ring in prison.

The couple shared the story of their relationship in The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, from the first time they exchanged words via email to the moment Ryan proposed to Gypsy, 32, while she was still behind bars.

About four months after the Louisiana teacher visited Gypsy in prison for the first time — and they talked for four hours and established a “seamless” connection, per Gypsy — the Munchausen by proxy syndrome victim told Ryan she was “smitten” with him. And that's when he knew it was time to propose.

“So I was like well, I’m still smitten with you, like ever,” he said in the Lifetime docuseries, adding that he had fallen “in love with her a long time ago.”

So, for his third visit to Missouri's Chillicothe Correctional Center where Gypsy was serving a 10-year prison sentence for her role in the fatal stabbing of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, he did not show up empty handed.

Ryan bought a ring and “snuck it in” by wearing it. “For the third visit, I bought an engagement ring. And I snuck it in, brought it on my chain," he revealed.

“She had her makeup done and she looked so cute, and I was sitting across from her and I looked at her, and I just knew,” he remembered. “It’s just one of those things. You know. And we had something special, we had that chemistry. And I asked her to marry me.”

Recalling the moment herself, his now-wife remembered him saying, “Gypsy Blanchard, I love you more than anything I've ever loved, and I would be the happiest man in the world if you would be my wife. Will you marry me?”

"And I said, ‘Yes.’ And he put the ring on my finger,” said Gypsy.

Discussing his own wedding band in the docuseries, Ryan revealed that Gypsy ordered it for him from a catalog. “This ring means a lot,” he said. “It symbolizes me and Gypsy’s love and even though we’re not married yet, I wear it every day.”

After his Prison Confessions interview was filmed, the couple wed on July 21, 2022 in a no-frills morning wedding at Missouri correctional center.

While talking to PEOPLE about the ceremony, Gypsy said that in the future, the couple plans on having a “reception, like a slash redo wedding with all of our family and our friends and the dress and the cake and everything, because we deserve that.”

“I deserve that,” she added. “He deserves that.”
