Gypsy Rose Blanchard, recently released from prison after killing her abusive mother Dee Dee in 2015, says her hardest day every year is the anniversary of her mother’s death.

Gypsy shared that experience on ABC’s The View Friday, the same day she was interviewed on Good Morning America. Co-host Ana Navarro asked the recent parolee, a victim of Munchausen by proxy, if she missed her mother in spite of the abuse she endured growing up.

“She was my mom and I miss her,” Gypsy said. “Everything she did to me, she was still my mother.”

Gypsy, who has been in therapy, also revealed what she does every year to mark the day her mom was killed.

“The anniversary of the crime is actually the hardest day of the year,” Gypsy said. “What I do on the anniversary is I play one of [Dee Dee’s] favorite songs and I allow myself that time to cry, and I mean bawl.”

When asked how she processes her conflicting feelings toward Dee Dee, Gypsy said she is patient with herself and tries to take it day-by-day. She said sometimes she’s angry and sometimes she’s remorseful and sad that her mother is gone.

“At first I was really upset finding out all of these things that she had done to me and just kind of the web that was going on, of lies and uncovering, that I became very angry,” Gypsy said. “Then after eight and a half years, I’ve come to realize that she suffered a lot from mental illness.”

Dee Dee Blanchard was killed in 2015 by Gypsy and her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn in her home in Springfield, Mo. Gypsy pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 10 years and prison and was granted parole this year. Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder in 2019 and sentenced to life without parole, according to court records. Godejohn and Gypsy have since separated.

Dee Dee, who had convinced people in her life that her daughter was terminally ill, is believed to have subjected Gypsy to painful unnecessary medical treatments.
