Jane Austen’s novels are the kind of literary treats that command attention with their sharp wit and intricate portrayals of social mores. So, when these classics are adapted for the big screen, you’d naturally expect everyone to be all eyes and ears, right? Well, Gwyneth Paltrow shared a hilarious tidbit on “Hot Ones” that proves even the most esteemed audiences can find themselves dozing off amidst the elegance of Austen’s world.

Picture this: a special 1996 screening of Emma, starring Paltrow herself, taking place in a venue as grand as the White House. Among the distinguished guests, silver screen stars, and perhaps a few inconspicuous Secret Service agents, there was one viewer who nodded off, and hard.

Halfway through her fiery culinary ordeal with Sean Evans, the show’s host known for his scorching questions, Paltrow was asked about a particularly juicy rumor. “Is it true that Bill Clinton passed out asleep during a White House Screening of Emma?” Evans inquired during the latest episode, which you can watch in full here.

Without missing a beat (or having even one bead of sweat on her brow from the hot sauce), Paltrow confirmed the sleep tale. “True.” Paltrow starred as the titular character, Emma Woodhouse, a young woman in 19th century England who plays matchmaker with her friends. Clearly this screening time was not a great match for the 42nd President of the United States.

“He was snoring right in front of me. I was like wow, I guess this is going to be a real hit movie… but it was, so f** you, Bill Clinton!” she added with a laugh.

Despite the snoozefest for Clinton, Emma went on to be a critical and commercial success, further cementing Paltrow’s status as a ’90s A-Lister, paving the way for a lifelong career focusing on film and wellness with her brand, GOOP. The film offered a fresh take on Austen’s novel, praised for its charm and wit — as Austen novels often are.

So, while not every presidential movie night might end with rave reviews from all attendees, Paltrow’s story serves as a humorous reminder that sometimes, the most memorable moments come from the unscripted, human experiences.
