Following her Instagram update, Paltrow penned a sweet tribute to her late friend Matthew Perry following his death on Saturday.

Sharing a throwback picture of the Friends alum, Paltrow revealed that she met Perry in 1993 at Massachusetts’ Williamstown Theater Festival. “We were both there for most of the summer doing plays,” Paltrow explained.

“He was so funny and so sweet and so much fun to be with,” she added. “We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass. It was a magical summer.”

She continued that at the time he had “shot the pilot of Friends but it had not aired yet,” therefore Perry “was nervous, hoping his big break was just around the corner.”

“It was,” Paltrow wrote. “We stayed friends for a while until we drifted apart, but I was always happy to see him when I did. I am super sad today, as so many of us are. I hope Matthew is at peace at long last. I really do.”

Perry died on Saturday at age 54. First responders arrived at his residence at 4:07 p.m local time and found him in his jacuzzi. In a statement to PEOPLE, the Los Angeles Fire Department said “Firefighters pulled the victim out of the jacuzzi and did a quick medical assessment to find he was deceased."

"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," his family said in a statement. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love.”
