Guy Pearce in Prison Drama ‘Inside,’ From Palme d’Or Winner Charles Williams (EXCLUSIVE)

Guy Pearce (“LA Confidential,” “Memento”) has recently wrapped production on “Inside,” an Australian crime thriller and coming of age drama film. The picture is the debut feature of Charles Williams, whose short film “All These Creatures” won the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.

The story sees after a young man transferred from juvenile to adult prison, where he is taken under the wing of both Australia’s most despised criminal, and a soon-to-be-a-paroled inmate. A paternal triangle grows between them, suggesting that even the worst of men may have a little bit of good inside them — that will be their eventual undoing.

The cast is headed by Pearce, Cosmo Jarvis (“Persuasion,” “Lady Macbeth”) and newcomer Vincent Miller. Supporting actors include Toby Wallace (“Babyteeth,” “The Royal Hotel”), Tara Morice (“Strictly Ballroom,” “Dance Academy”), Chloé Hayden (“Heartbreak High”) and Michael Logo (“Colin From Accounts”).

“Inside” is being produced by Marian Macgowan (“Two Hands,” “The Great”) for Macgowan Films and Kate Glover (“Hot Milk,” “The Phantom of the Open”) for Never Sleep Pictures, with Thomas M. Wright (“The Stranger,” “Acute Misfortune”) serving as executive producer.

Bonsai Films is distributing for Australia and New Zealand. Goodfellas (Wild Bunch) is handling international sales.

Filming took place in Melbourne, Victoria state. The film was attracted to Victoria through VicScreen’s Victorian Screen Incentive and Regional Location Assistance Fund. The picture was financed in association with VicScreen with support from the Melbourne International Film Festival Premiere Fund and Screen NSW. Additional funding partners include Finnish Impact Film Fund, Aurora Studios, Obscura and Film I Väst along with Soundfirm.

“It was incredibly defining to have spent my formative years growing up in regional Victoria and I couldn’t imagine making this film anywhere else. It’s a part of Australia we don’t often see on screen and I’m very grateful to have had the support to shoot here,” said writer and director Williams.

Macgowan Films is an independent production company that has been operational for over 30 years, and which has produced or executive produced films and documentaries “The Great,” “The Rage in Lake Placid” and the Gillian Armstrong-directed “Women He’s Undressed.”

Macgowan said, “VicScreen’s early and generous support has been pivotal in enabling us to bring Charles’ Williams debut feature to the screen in regional and metropolitan Victoria.”
