This Guy Figured Out What It Would Cost to Save Matt Damon's Movie Characters

Was it worth it?

Mark Watney seems like a great dude. In The Martain, Matt Damon's character was funny, smart, brave-a real American hero. But, was it really worth an estimated $200 billion to go get his ass back from Mars? Private Ryan also seems like a good kid. It's truly honorable that a group of Army Rangers risked their lives during WWII to bring him home. Then again, when you put a $100,000 price tag on it this seems, well, kind of expensive. We definitely know that Damon's character in Interstellar wasn't worth about $500 billion.

After the question "How much money has been spent attempting to bring Matt Damon back from distant places?" popped up on Quora, one user did his best to estimate the cost. Here's his breakdown:

Fictional CostsMy estimates, costs are in 2015 currency
Courage Under Fire (Gulf War 1 helicopter rescue): $300k
Saving Private Ryan (WW2 Europe search party): $100k
Titan AE (Earth evacuation spaceship): $200B
Syriana (Middle East private security return flight): $50k
Green Zone (US Army transport from Middle East): $50k
Elysium (Space station security deployment and damages): $100m
Interstellar (Interstellar spaceship): $500B
The Martian (Mars mission): $200B
TOTAL: $900B plus change

We love you, Damon, but damn, your characters are costing us a ton. Maybe next time you could play a character that just needs to be picked up from the airport.
