Guthrie's Beau Dale wraps up stellar high school golf career with win in OCA All-State tournament

TULSA — Beau Dale had his comfort on the greens with him.

It was the final hole of Dale’s run at the golf state tournament in Duncan earlier this year and the Guthrie senior was followed his Luke Dale, an assistant coach as well as his brother. Also following were Guthrie coach Ric Meshew and Meshew’s daughter.

As soon as the final ball dropped, the group hugged and all cried together. The group had spent nearly a decade together on the golf course and the run had finally come to an end.

“He’s an outstanding young man,” Meshew said of Dale. “I had the privilege to coach him and his older brother. (Luke) played on a couple of state championship teams for us so, I’ve been around Beau and his family for about seven or eight years, they’re an outstanding family.”

Luke was a part of the 2018 and 2019 state championship teams before the COVID-19 pandemic kept them from competing in 2020. But at the start of the 2022 season, Luke became Guthrie’s assistant coach.

Dale had a great year which ended with a nomination in the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State golf tournament, which he competed in on Monday at Cherokee Hill Golf Club in Catoosa. The senior teamed with Christian Heritage’s Gavin Watson and the West duo won all four of the categories, taking a 4-0 sweep over their pair.

The categories were split between scramble, 4-Ball, modified alternate shot and total points.

“It was really awesome to play with another person, especially one that’s good,” Dale said. “We were a really good team and we worked really well together.”

Dale was then honored with the Kyle Lewis Scholarship of $1,000. The scholarship is in the name of Bethel’s Lewis, a 2010 All-State golfer who was killed in a car wreck on the way home from Tulsa after playing in the 2010 All-State event. This award is based on good character, school activities, community service and on the financial need of the athlete.

Dale is the student council president and valedictorian.

“He’s very well deserving of the scholarship,” Meshew said.

Dale and Watson split the duties with Watson taking the tee shots and Dale hitting anything that required the iron and they both handled putting.

“Just having that team where you’re able to go from a scramble to best ball to alternate shot,” Dale said, “it was super cool and really fun.”

East shuts out West

The lowest score usually wins in golf, but that wasn’t the case on Monday as 48 golfers battled it out for their respective sides of the state. In the teamed events, the highest score took the crown.

The East topped the West 25-23 to take revenge for last year’s loss. The East boys scored 10.5, the East girls had 14.5 while the West boys tallied 13.5 and 9.5.

The West’s Edmond North’s Aiden Coffelt and Edmond Memorial’s Olivia Coit won the honors for best duo for the girls. Together the pair shot a 67 on the course. The East’s Perkins-Tryon’s Gunnar Thrash and Haworth’s Kody Carrell took the title for the boy shooting a 66.
