The focus of Season 17 is on Roger Ewing’s character, a recently freed prisoner who unwillingly consents to kill a stranger for cash on behalf of a resentful cellmate. Arriving at Jess Hume’s (Gene Evans) property to kill him in a way that would resemble an accident, he instead falls in love with Kate, Jess’s considerably younger wife (Mariette Hartley). She is attracted to Phoenix for various reasons, but she truly likes the rough, older man despite their age gap.
James Arness, Dennis Weaver, Milburn Stone, and Amanda Blake are the main cast. Burt Reynolds, Roger Ewing, Buck Taylor, and Pat Hingle are seen in the supporting cast.
