Guillermo del Toro's Cold War film is readying for release.
Fox Searchlight on Wednesday announced The Shape of Water will hit theaters Dec. 8. It currently is the only film with that release date, though it is a prime awards-season spot that will fill up fast.
Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones and Michael Stuhlbarg are among the cast.
The studio's release date announcement was accompanied by an expanded logline for Shape of Water: Set against the backdrop of Cold War-era America circa 1963, the "other-worldly fairytale" centers on Elisa (Hawkins), a lonely woman who is trapped in a life of silence and isolation within the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works. Her life is changed forever when she and her co-worker Zelda (Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment.
Del Toro wrote the screenplay with Vanessa Taylor, and produced the film with J. Miles Dale.
