Guillermo del Toro Prefers ‘Better Call Saul’ to ‘Breaking Bad’: ‘The Moral Downfall Strikes Me as Deeper’
Guillermo del Toro has never been one to hide his enthusiasm for the films, TV series, and books he loves, and so it is with “Better Call Saul.” Fresh off of jury duty in Venice, the Oscar-winning filmmaker has taken to Twitter to praise the new season of the “Breaking Bad” spinoff — and explain why he now likes it more than the original show.
“A small reflection in the middle of BETTER CALL SAUL’s new seasson: I like it even more than BB, not to be a contrarian but because the evident stakes seem smaller but the moral downfall strike me as deeper, more poignant…,” the “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Shape of Water” director tweeted.
“With Walter White (who turns Black) you were tracking a massive downfall/transformation. BCS takes you by the hand as Jimmy becomes Saul Goodman (No Good in him) in small painful tumbles.”
He then added, “Kim is the key!”
Now in its fourth season, “Better Call Saul” has received critical acclaim since premiering in early 2015. Much of the praise has gone to star Bob Odenkirk, who has received three Emmy nominations for his performance in the title role in addition to two Screen Actors Guild Award nods and three Golden Globe nominations.
