Gruesome Injury Forces ‘Naked and Afraid XL’ Contestant to Return to U.S.

Pain is synonymous with the show Naked and Afraid XL, as contestants battling mother nature often get hurt. But some injuries are more gruesome than others, like Charlie’s unfortunate trip that led to a serious injury while trying to survive in Ecuador’s Amazon basin.

Charlie was descending a hill to gather firewood when he slipped and severely twisted his knee. A medic saw signs of severe trauma, saying Charlie had torn tendons and ligaments that would most likely require surgery back in the United States. Trying to tough it out, Charlie told producers, “On a scale of 1 to 10 in pain, it’s a zero. It doesn’t hurt. I want to go back to work.”

Ultimately a producer decided Charlie’s health was more important than the show, saying, “We don’t think we can in good conscience medically let you continue the challenge, and we’re gonna have to get you back to the United States for possibly surgery.”

Naked and Afraid XL airs Sundays at 10 p.m. on Discovery.
