Grubhub driver eats customer's food after pickup from SoCal restaurant

A Long Beach, California, Grubhub customer with their sights set on dinner received quite a shock late last week.

The unidentified buyer was contacted by Martin Luzanilla, the owner and CEO of Mexihanas Hibachi Grill — and he didn’t have good news.

Luzanilla informed the unsuspecting patron that their food had been tampered with, and the entire incident was caught on camera.

The businessman told KTLA that he noticed the Grubhub delivery driver sitting in his car in the hibachi grill’s parking lot ravaging through a bag of food that was sealed just moments before.

“The first thing he started chowing down on was our garlic noodles — which I don’t blame him, they’re good,” Luzanilla quipped to the news camera.

After explaining that the Grubhub contractor used his teeth to rip through the plastic bag and devour the customer’s food, the CEO’s demeanor soon changed.

“I was pissed. I was upset,” he said.

“I went outside and confronted the gentleman, and he told me it was his food,” Luzanilla added. Video that played during the newscast showed the business owner approaching the unidentified man’s car.

Despite the man’s claims that it was his food, Luzanilla still had an uneasy feeling, so he checked the security footage.

“[He was eating] mouthfuls; whatever didn’t fit in his mouth was falling right back onto that plate,” he said. “As soon as I saw [that], I rushed to the phone and called the customer.”

Unfortunately, by the time he was able to get a hold of them, the food had already been delivered.

Luzanilla told the customer what he saw on the security footage and offered to give them a copy of the video. He then went above and beyond to do what he could to rectify the situation by remaking the order and delivering it to the customer himself.

While speaking with KTLA, the businessman stated that a large portion of his sales comes from food delivery apps such as UberEats and Grubhub — nearly 40 percent of his orders.

Luzanilla explained that delivery drivers who tamper with his customers’ food also put his livelihood at risk.

“More than anything, it’s the bad review,” he told the outlet. “When we get a bad review because someone didn’t receive something, how’s that going to look?”

He also added that he wants to see Grubhub do better at creating tamper-proof seals, claiming they are as easily removed as “a piece of velcro.”

Still, Luzanilla isn’t washing his hands with delivery drivers, stating that he is fine with helping those who may be in need.

“If you’re any delivery service driver and you come into my restaurant to deliver some food and you’re hungry, I got you,” he said. “Seriously, you don’t need to pick into the food. I’ll take care of it for you. I’ll get you a bowl, that way you can eat. Because I appreciate what you guys do for me and my company.”

PEOPLE reached out to Mexihanas Hibachi Grill for comment, but did not immediately hear back.

“We have no tolerance for misconduct on our platform,” a spokesperson for Grubhub said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

"The vast majority of our orders are completed without incident or complaint, and when things don’t go as planned, we work hard to make things right. Upon hearing of this situation, we took immediate action and permanently ended the driver’s contract with us, removing his access to our platform. We’ve also reached out to the diner and restaurant owner to address and help resolve the situation,” the statement continued.
