The Growing Frustration of Financially Supporting Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced that they would be moving to North America and relinquishing their responsibilities as senior members of the royal family, they also cited the desire to become financially independent.

The couple already has a handful of opportunities in front of them for that goal to be reached; however, it's being reported that their security detail will still be funded by the British taxpayers, something that is contributing to a growing frustration with the financial support Prince Harry and Meghan are receiving.

Astronomical Costs Associated with Prince Harry and Meghan's Security

The need for security is undeniable, as the couple are international figures, regardless of whether they live in the UK, moving forward. The security in question will, in fact, be funded by public and the amount of money it takes per year to ensure it's adequate is astronomical, to say the least.

According to the British reporter Rob Shuter, the cost is not for the faint-hearted. "$1 million per year is the number I got from the security company," Shuter revealed on Good Day New York on Monday. It was also shared that the amount could be much more expensive, given that the couple won't be in the UK. This is sure to anger the taxpayers, as they're already not happy about having to pay for their security in the first place. "She could end up one of the most hated women in Britain," Shuter said, referring to Meghan Markle.

Over 32 Million Pounds for The Wedding Paid by Taxpayers

And it's not just that the couple is going to have security paid for them by the British taxpayers, it's also that their wedding was outrageously expensive, as were the renovations they had done to their home, all of which was footed by taxes.

The wedding costs were especially a sore subject for taxpayers as they were required to fork out 32 million pounds. Of that cost, 30 million pounds went to pay for security. Another 1.5 million was spent by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport.

The royal family only paid for more personal costs associated with the wedding such as the reception, flowers, and other aspects of the overall design and planning for the event.

"As was the case with the wedding of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Royal Family will pay for the core aspects of the wedding, such as the church service, the associated music, flowers, decorations, and the reception afterward," read a statement by Kensington Palace.

Unncessary Frogmore Renovations Costed Approximately 3 Million Pounds

If the marriage bill wasn't enough to outrage the public, which it certainly was, the costs of the renovations to Frogmore Cottage put things over the top. Pubic records revealed that the total cost to convert the cottage from five individual flats to one large compound required 2.4 million pounds, even with the renovations not being fully complete.

Even more frustrating for the British taxpayers was that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to move to Frogmore so that they wouldn't be 'living in the shadows' of Prince William and Kate Middleton in Kensington Palace.

Graham Smith, a member of the anti-monarchy campaign group, Republic, was one of the first to lash out at the couple for their perceived wasteful spending, comparing the cost of the renovations to charitable donations for those with PTSD. "A charity spent £2.4 million on a support center for Marines suffering PTSD. The taxpayers then spent the same amount on a luxury private home for Harry and Meghan," he said.

Increasing Frustration from Financially Supporting Prince Harry and Meghan's Extravagance

While the money that it took to put on Prince Harry and Meghan's wedding, along with the costs for the Frogmore Cottage renovation, can no longer be dealt with, the British taxpayers are sure to continue to raise their concerns regarding where their money is going, especially with a couple that doesn't want to live in the UK anymore or perhaps, one that won't ultimately retain their titles. It will certainly be interesting moving forward as the true amount that it will cost for Harry and Meghan's security detail should soon be revealed.
