Groom Kills Bride, Her Family and Himself at Wedding Reception Hours After Getting Married

Chaturong Suksuk, 29, the shooter, was a silver medal winning swimmer in top para-athletic competitions

Just hours after he was pronounced married, the groom left his reception and returned with a gun, fatally shooting his bride, her mother, her younger sister and another guest before killing himself. Another guest was injured in the gunfire.

The wedding mass shooting in which five people were killed in northeast Thailand over the weekend was reported by The Bangkok Post, the BBC and CBS News, along with various local Thai outlets.

The groom, Chaturong Suksuk, 29, and his bride, Kanchana Pachunthuek, 44, had celebrated a traditional morning wedding Saturday.

Feasting and a party followed, but guests and relatives of the wedding couple later recalled to The Bangkok Post that the groom appeared unhappy at the reception later that night.

The party lasted well into the night, and in the midst of the festivities, Suksuk – who police later told the BBC “was quite intoxicated at the time” – left hastily.

The groom returned from his car soon after with a pistol, shooting and killing his bride, as well as her mother Kingthong Klajoho, 62, and her younger sister Kornnipa Manato, 38. A stray bullet hit a 50-year-old guest, Thong Nonkhunthod, who died at the hospital, per the BBC.

Bamrung Chatherat, 28, another guest, was also seriously injured in the shooting and admitted to a local hospital.

With his bride and her family dead, Suksuk then turned the gun on himself and died instantly, per The Bangkok Post.

Suksuk, who had won a silver medal in swimming at the 11th Asean Para Games in Indonesia last year, was also listed to compete in the World Abilitysport Games 2023 next month, per the The Bangkok Post and the BBC.

The former marine soldier had lost a leg after a train accident while on duty, Roongjroj Tang-amnuay, the Wang Nam Khieo police chief, said, per The Bangkok Post.

Police said that Chatherat had purchased his gun and ammunition legally last year, CBS News reported.

Investigators who came to the crime scene recovered 11 spent cartridges of 9mm ammunition, according to Police Colonel Tang-amnuay, per The Bangkok Post.

The wedding couple had lived together for three years prior to their wedding, per the three outlets.

Police are still investigating the motive of the shooting, including a reported fight between the couple on the day of the wedding.

“They had an argument on private matters and Chaturong walked to his car and picked up a gun before shooting,” Matichon Wongbaokul, a police officer from northeastern Nakhon Ratchasima province, said, per CBS News.
