Grimes has some eccentric interests, but deep down, she might just be a Swiftie like the rest of us. In a recent interview, the musician revealed how “doing Taylor Swift cosplay” helped her write her song “California.”

Grimes sat down with K-pop girl group Aespa for Rolling Stone’s “Musicians on Musicians” series, chatting about their shared love of technology in art. Aespa’s Giselle mentioned her love of “Easily” and “California,” two piano-embellished tracks from Grimes’ 2015 album Art Angels. “How did you come up with that vibe?” Giselle asked.

“‘California,’ I think I was just doing Taylor Swift cosplay, but it’s also vaguely about how the media is obsessed with portraying you as this troubled soul or something,” Grimes responded. “I don’t know if you guys get that the same way in your media.”

Giselle agreed: “Oh, we definitely get that,” mentioning how the “media tries to portray us badly.”

“California” sees Grimes reckon with being an artist while simultaneously being scrutinized for her every decision: “The things they see in me, I cannot see myself/ When you get bored of me, I’ll be back on the shelf,” she sings in some of the track’s most Swiftian lines. It calls to mind the Red (Taylor’s Version) vault track “Nothing New,” on which Swift also ponders how long she’ll last in the music industry: “What will become of me once I’ve lost my novelty?”

Elsewhere in the interview, Grimes and Aespa discussed the future of AI, the hardships of touring, the visual elements of K-pop, and more.

Earlier this year, Grimes launched Elf.Tech, an AI voice software that allows fans to record or upload vocals that will be transformed into her voice.

As for Swift, she just earned her 10th No. 1 hit with the four-year-old “Cruel Summer.” She’ll resume “The Eras Tour” next month with shows in Latin America, before heading to AsiaAustralia, Europe, and North America next year. Tickets for the international dates can be purchased here, and you can secure your seats for her North American stops here.
