Grey's Anatomy recap: Amelia tells Owen she's pregnant

Hospitals are full of people giving and receiving news. Sometimes it’s good. Sometimes it’s bad. For the doctors of Pac North, and one who meandered over from Grey Sloan Memorial, the hits keep coming. There is no sliver lining. There is no bright side. It’s just very bad news.

Maggie notices a woman who looks exactly like her and is stunned to learn that Sabrina (a.k.a. Sabi) is her cousin. Her father Chris is Richard’s brother. And she’s in town for a visit. She’s spunky, full of life, and is thrilled when Maggie offers to drive Sabi and brooding Chris to Pac North.

Bubbly Sabi thinks she and Maggie could be twins. They look alike. They even sound alike. And, in fact, Kelly McCreary’s (Maggie) sister Crystal plays Sabi. They really are related! Well played, Grey’s Anatomy. Well played.

Sabi launches into Richard and he welcomes her with loving arms. His brother is a different story. But there’s no time for family quarrels. Sabi whips out her phone and shows Richard a picture of her heart. With a big fat tumor on it. In fact, it’s the biggest tumor Maggie has ever seen.

This is very bad news. However, Maggie is one of the top heart surgeons and she can do the surgery. Hooray! Maggie practically undresses right there to hop into those ugly scrubs. Sabi stops her. She doesn’t want a family member operating on her. Maggie pushes back, reminding Sabi that she’s known her for two hours. It’s not like they are really family. Sabi and Chris continue to refuse.

Richard wants to save face with his brother so he shuts Maggie down and calls the No. 2 guy. He asks his daughter to stay for a consult. Maggie is baffled by the fact that the best person for the job is sitting on the bench. When Sabi crashes, Richard makes a game-time decision, begging Chris to let Maggie operate. He concedes.

Gemma comes onto the scene and tries to make Richard feel better about all the family drama by rubbing his arm. Ugh. Naturally, Catherine walks in at that time and eyes Gemma up and down. She and Richard will not be speaking about this incident until later. She also offers Gemma any job she wants with the foundation, as long as it’s not in Seattle. Burn.

For a hot minute, Chris and Richard reminisce about good times and the mood lightens in the waiting room. Things aren’t quite as cheery in the OR. Maggie can’t stop Sabi’s blood from clotting and very bad things ensue. Alex is called in when Maggie refuses to stop working on her cousin and he’s the one who commands everyone to stop. Sabi is gone and he calls time of death.

What. Is. Happening?

Maggie immediately blames herself for bullying Sabi into doing the surgery. Alex walks her into a closet and gives her permission to properly meltdown. She lets go of a gut-wrenching wail as Alex watches. Then she puts on a stoic face, reports all of the facts, and apologizes to her uncle that his daughter died on the table.

I am undone. So is Chris. So is everyone else.

In other potentially bad news, Amelia commandeers a stuffed animal, claiming it is Leo’s, which gives her a chance to return said fluffy elephant to Owen in the middle of the Pac North ER. Owen laughs, knowing the elephant is not Leo’s. In the middle of the “you’re a dork” moment, Amelia blurts out, “Link and I are having a baby.”

Before Owen can respond, a woman is rushed into the hospital. She fell down the stairs and her son called 9-1-1. Owen takes the mom to check her out. Amelia takes the son to waiting room, clocking in as his unofficial babysitter.

Fortunately, the woman is going to be okay, but Owen drops an unexpected bomb. She’s pregnant. The good news is that the baby is fine. We are all shocked when she responds, “It didn’t work?” Owen slips into the waiting room to ask Amelia to join him in the panicked woman’s room.

Owen explains that she needs surgery on her spleen, but it would put the pregnancy at risk. Then he asks her why she threw herself down the stairs? Mortified, the woman explains that she didn’t. She took a double dose of herbs to terminate her pregnancy that made her dizzy causing the fall. Amelia assures her that while Owen is taking care of her spleen, an OR doctor can take care of the pregnancy.

Owen thinks Amelia has crossed a line and refuses to call an OR doctor. As a result, Amelia goes back to the woman after the surgery to give her two pills that will terminate her pregnancy. Owen loses his mind and hauls Amelia into the hallway where bad conversations always happen.

They shout at each other. Amelia defends the woman’s right to choose. Finally, Owen reminds Amelia that she never wanted a baby. In fact, her unwillingness to be a mother was the catalyst for their divorce. It suddenly makes sense. Owen can’t help but conclude that Amelia didn’t want to have a baby with him.

Amelia apologizes and tells Owen that he is the reason why she changed her mind. Betty and Leo are the reason she changed her mind. She can do this now because they are a family.

A big, weird, dysfunctional family. Welcome to the chaos!
