'Grey's Anatomy' fans flip out after two more old characters return to the show

Two more beloved characters returned on Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy. Deceased Drs. Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) visited Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) in her COVID-induced beach dream. Lexi and McSteamy are just the latest characters to return from the grave this season. Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd and T.R. Knight’s George O’Malley have also shown up on the beach with Meredith.

Lexie and Mark helped Meredith work through her existential crisis, with one emotional scene after another. At one point, Meredith told them how much she missed them, to which Lexie responded, “That's kind of a waste of time ... because we never left you.” Mark added, “Sometimes we're right next to you, yelling in your ear.”

The reunion brought tears and joy to fans, who celebrated the beloved characters return on Twitter.

The return of fan favorites from the past lends more credence to rumors that Season 17 will be the final season of historic series. While nothing has been confirmed, appearances by actors from the past is often associated with the final season of long-running series.

Grey's Anatomy airs weeknights at 6 p.m. on ABC.
