Green Day reworked the lyrics to its hit song “American Idiot” during a performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest Sunday night to take a swing at Donald Trump and MAGA.
“I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong sang during “American Idiot” on the ABC broadcast. Armstrong swapped the line for “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” sparking online outrage from Trump supporters.

It wasn’t the first time the group made the swap during a performance. It last occurred in 2019 during the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. In 2016, the band also chanted “No Trump, no KKK [Ku Klux Klan], no fascist USA,” during a performance of the song “Bang Bang” at the American Music Awards soon after Trump won the presidency.
Green Day rose to fame in the 1990s with albums such as Dookie, Insomniac and Nimrod. The record “American Idiot” was a critique of a U.S. media created “age of paranoia” and expressed the disillusionment and dissent of a generation that came of age in a period shaped by tumultuous events such as 9/11 and the Iraq War. It won the Grammy for Best Rock Album. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 and has earned 20 Grammy nominations over the last several decades.
