Green Day Blasts Donald Trump During American Music Awards Performance
Green Day made a political statement during its performance at the American Music Awards Sunday night, slamming President-elect Donald Trump in the process.
The band took the stage to perform “Bang Bang,” the lead single off the trio’s most recent album “Revolution Radio,” and then made it clear how it felt about this month’s election results. Breaking out into a chant, the band yelled “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.”
It’s only the latest big statement from Green Day about the 2016 election. Earlier this month, Green Day performed at the MTV EMA Awards, and while singing 2004 hit “American Idiot,” lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong altered the lyrics to sing, “Can you hear the sounds of hysteria? The subliminal Trump America.”
Armstrong also recently compared Trump to Hitler in an interview with Kerrang. “He just said, ‘You have no options and I’m the only one, and I’m going to take care of it myself.’ I mean, that’s f—ing Hitler, man!” Armstrong told the magazine.
While the 2016 AMAs remained mostly about the music, there were of course some other political barbs mixed in. At the top of the show, co-host Gigi Hadid showed off her Melania Trump impression.
Green Day last performed at the AMAs in 2009, playing single “21 Guns” at the annual fan-voted awards show.
