Great British Bake Off final fourth most-watched show in Channel 4 history

Last year The Great British Bake Off was at the centre of a huge scandal when it was revealed that Channel 4 had “poached” the programme from its BBC One home, with fans being left concerned when they learned that the much-loved baking show would be switching channels.

With hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins jumping ship, alongside judge Mary Berry, there were growing fears that Channel 4’s version of the show would be a flop – a worry that now seems laughable considering Channel 4’s huge Bake Off success.

In fact, it has now been revealed that this year’s Bake Off final is the fourth most-watched show in Channel 4’s 35-year history, with 10million people tuning in to watch Sophie Faldo get crowned the winner – and that’s despite judge Prue Leith revealing who had won on her Twitter account earlier that day.

The number includes those who recorded the show and watched it up to seven days after its initial Halloween air date, securing its place in Channel 4 history.

The largest audience that Channel 4 has ever seen was for the final episode of TV mini-series A Woman Of Substance, which was watched by 13.9million people in January 1985.

Second place goes to a screening of Hugh Grant film Four Weddings And A Funeral in November 1995, which saw 12.4million tune in, and third is a showing of Gregory’s Girl in January 1985, which received 10.8million viewers.

Despite being a huge feat for Channel 4, the 10million figure is still nearly six million lower than the amount of people who watched last year’s Bake Off final on the BBC, which had huge ratings of 15.9million.

In fact, it is also below the finale ratings for 2014 and 2015’s series of the show, but beats the 2013 final which got 9.5million viewers.
