Stars Robson Green and Tom Brittney, who revealed the news on an Instagram live video, will return.

This comes as the fifth season finale of the Kudos-produced drama is set to air in the U.S. this Sunday.

Brittney and Green revealed that the show is set to start shooting in September and could become one of the first big British scripted series to return.

The show, set in the quaint but crime-ridden village of Grantchester, England, follows the investigations of an unlikely pairing: a detective (Green) and a vicar (Brittney).

Season 5 picked up in Cambridge in 1957, a year after the current fourth season in which Prime Minister Harold MacMillan told the British people that they had “never had it so good.”

Green said that he was “so happy” that the show was returning. “I can eat, again. It’s a miracle,” he joked.

He was told to keep September to January free. “I think it’s going be strange, I just hope the scripts aren’t dictated too much by something beyond our control but I’m sure they will be,” he said.

Brittney, who said that he was keen to get back to his “happy place”, added, “It’s looking good, Grantchester could be one of the first things filming,” he said. “You can’t write COVID into the 1950s.”

Green also said that the mystery of DI Geordie Keating’s hat will be revealed in season six.

“In every series, part of costume is his hat, I’ve only worn it twice but I carry it round with me. You find out in the next season, why I carry the hat. It’s not just about the hat, maybe there’s something under his hat that may be revealed,” he said.

Grantchester is a co-production of Kudos and Masterpiece for ITV and is distributed internationally by Endemol Shine International. It is exec produced by Emma Kingsman-Lloyd, writer-creator Daisy Coulam and Masterpiece’s Rebecca Eaton.
