One of the changes the Recording Academy introduced for the upcoming Grammys was moving the Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year, Non-Classical categories up to the general field. Grammy voters can only vote in three fields besides the general field, and they can only vote in 10 categories between those three fields. While Songwriter of the Year was its own field when that award was introduced last year, Producer of the Year was grouped with the niche engineering prizes. As such, most voters probably didn’t want to spend one of their three fields to vote in one category only. The goal of adding the categories to general was to allow all voters to weigh in on them, hopefully producing a more representative list of those who work behind the scenes. That’s especially important this year with a diverse and exciting list of contenders for both awards. Let’s consider who might make the cut for Producer of the Year.

Jack Antonoff is very likely getting his fifth consecutive nomination in the category, and could challenge for a third consecutive win. Antonoff’s biggest work this year is Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” which is going into nominations as the presumed frontrunner for Album of the Year. That said, Antonoff has worked on more than just Swift’s music: he produced for stars like The 1975 and Lana Del Rey on their respective Grammy hopeful albums this year.

However, Antonoff’s reign might be challenged by another Grammy favorite: Brandi Carlile. The Americana goddess is responsible for some great work in the genre this year. Her mantel includes Brandy Clark’s self-titled album, Tanya Tucker’s “Sweet Western Sound,” and perhaps most importantly, Joni Mitchell’s comeback record, “Live At Newport.” Even if Carlile falls short of the win, expect a nomination.

But this year’s frontrunner might be Metro Boomin. The hip-hop producer has had a packed year, including the success of his album “Heroes and Villains,” which is a frontrunner for Best Rap Album. Metro’s biggest hit single this year was the Weeknd-assisted “Creepin’,” but he also worked on songs with Future, Young Thug, Travis Scott and Chris Brown. Plus, his work as the producer of the “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” soundtrack might earn him even more respect; he curated the collection with hits from hip-hop’s biggest stars. But Metro is Grammy-less, unlike multiple past winners Carlile and Antonoff, so this would be a nice way to reward him after years of consistent work.

Besides those three, there isn’t really a lock. It’s likely that someone who worked on SZA’s “SOS,” this year’s possible runner-up for Album of the Year, gets in. Picking one is the tricky part, though, because both Carter Lang and Rob Bisel worked extensively on the album. Perhaps Bisel is more likely, since he also worked on another Album of the Year nomination hopeful: Babyface’s “Girls Night Out.” Still, it’s possible that both get in, and that would be well deserved; “SOS’s” sonic diversity is due to both of their contributions.

If the Grammys choose one over the other, it’s hard to say who the fifth nominee would be. One option could be star R&B producer Camper, formerly known as DJ Camper, whose work this year ranges from Coco Jones to Usher. Aaron Dessner also had a pretty strong year working on records for Gracie Abrams, The National and Ed Sheeran, in addition to individual songs by Taylor Swift and Fred Again. And there’s Dan Nigro, Olivia Rodrigo’s main producer. He was snubbed for his work on Rodrigo’s previous album, “Sour,” so maybe voters aren’t that into him. However, “Guts” is more refined and might be irresistible due to how it incorporated more live instrumentation.

My Predictions: Jack Antonoff, Rob Bisel, Brandi Carlile, Aaron Dessner, Metro Boomin
