Grammys Nominations 2020: Bon Iver, Lana, Lizzo, Billie Eilish, Vampire Weekend Lead Nominees
The nominations for the 2020 Grammy Awards were revealed today. Lizzo has the most nominations this year with eight. Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X have six nominations each. All three artists are up for Album of the Year, where they’ll compete against Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Lana Del Rey, Ariana Grande, and H.E.R. Check out the full list of nominations. The Grammys take place on January 26 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Lizzo’s eight nominations are for Album of the Year (CUZ I LOVE YOU (Deluxe)), Record of the Year and Song of the Year (“Truth Hurts”), Best New Artist, Best Pop Solo Performance, Best R&B Performance (“Exactly How I Feel”), Best Traditional R&B Performance (“Jerome”), and Best Urban Contemporary Album. While “Truth Hurts” originally came out back in 2017, it’s eligible this year because of its inclusion on the deluxe version of CUZ I LOVE YOU. The Song of the Year nomination is particularly notable due to the ongoing legal dispute about who deserves songwriting credit on the single.
Bon Iver, who won Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammys, is up for three awards: Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album for i,i, and Record of the Year for “Hey, Ma.” Justin Vernon’s band will compete against Vampire Weekend’s comeback record Father of the Bride for AOTY and Best Alternative Album.
Also nominated for Best Alternative Album are Thom Yorke, Big Thief (for their first album of 2019, U.F.O.F.), and James Blake. The 1975, Tool, Vampire Weekend, Brittany Howard, and Gary Clark Jr. are up for Best Rock Song. Howard is also up for Best Rock Performance alongside Karen O & Danger Mouse. Along with his Best Alternative Music Album nomination for ANIMA, Thom Yorke was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media for “Suspirium.” Notable among Best Rock Album nominees is The Cranberries, scoring their first ever nomination for “In the End.”
Breakout stars Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X are nominated in several categories, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year, where Eilish’s “bad guy” will compete against the omnipresent “Old Town Road (Remix).” Earlier this year, Eilish’s single ended “Old Town Road”’s its record-setting run at No. 1 on the charts. Notably, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross—whose Nine Inch Nails song “34 Ghosts IV” is heavily sampled in “Old Town Road”—are not nominated for any Grammys associated with Lil Nas X. Eilish is also the youngest artist ever to be nominated in all four major categories (AOTY, SOTY, ROTY, and Best New Artist).
Best Rap Album nominees this year include Tyler, the Creator’s IGOR, 21 Savages’s I Am > I Was, and Meek Mill’s Championships. The late Nipsey Hussle is up for three awards: Rap Performance, Rap Song, and Rap/Sung Performance. Other nominees in rap categories include DaBaby, Cardi B, Offset, DJ Khaled, Young Thug, J. Cole, Travis Scott, Chance the Rapper, YBN Cordae, Rick Ross, and Drake.
Beyoncé is up for four awards. Homecoming was nominated for Best Music Film. Her Lion King single “Spirit” is up for Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media, and The Lion King: The Gift is up for Best Pop Vocal Album.
Rosalía scored two nominations. El Mal Querer is nominated for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album. She is also up for Best New Artist, making her the first nominee to be recognized for a record entirely in Spanish.
Jack Antonoff is nominated for Producer of the Year (Non-Classical). His work in the past year with Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift, Kevin Abstract, and Red Hearse are listed in his nomination. Other nominees include the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, Billie Eilish’s brother Finneas, Carly Rae Jepsen producer John Hill, and Ricky Reed (for his work with Lizzo, Maggie Rogers, and more).
