Grammys 2020: Watch Usher, Sheila E., and FKA twigs’ Prince Tribute

Usher, Sheila E., and FKA twigs joined forces on the 2020 Grammy Awards stage tonight, where they performed a tribute to the late Prince. Usher kicked off the performance in a sparkling waistcoat for a version of “Little Red Corvette.” He then went into renditions of “When Doves Cry,” and “Kiss.” Sheila E. supported on vocals and drums. FKA twigs danced but did not sing during the performance. They were joined by a slew of dancers and a backing band.

FKA twigs was nominated for one Grammy Award this year, Best Music Video, for the “cellophane” visual. She lost out to Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Old Town Road (Remix)” music video.

According to a representative for the Grammys, it was FKA twigs’ decision not to sing during the Prince tribute. In addition, Sheila E. told USA Today, “She didn’t want to sing,” adding, “First she wanted to, but then she didn’t want to when we ran through it because she didn’t have a (microphone) pack and (in-ear monitors), so she couldn’t hear. And she would rather have danced—which is what we asked her as well. She chose not to, she said ‘No, I’m OK.’”

FKA twigs, however, tweeted, “of course i wanted to sing at the grammys. i wasn’t asked this time but hopefully in the future. none the less what an honour. congratulations to all winners x.”
