Grammys 2019: Ariana Grande Wins First Grammy

Sweetener won Best Pop Vocal Album over LPs by Camila Cabello, Taylor Swift, and more

Ariana Grande has won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 61st Grammy Awards. Her fourth studio album Sweetener took home the honor, beating out albums by Camila Cabello (Camila), Kelly Clarkson (Meaning of Life), Shawn Mendes (Shawn Mendes), P!nk (Beautiful Trauma), and Taylor Swift (reputation). Tonight marks the first time Ariana has ever won a Grammy, and as promised, she was not in attendance to accept the award. She was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance (for “God is a woman”). Grande offered her thanks in a series of tweets.

This week, Grande revealed on social media that she wouldn’t attend the Grammys following a dispute with the show’s producers over a planned performance. Producer Ken Ehrlich said in an interview that Grande “felt it was too late for her to pull something together” for the show. Grande responded, “I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me. I can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken. It was when my creativity & self-expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend.” (Ehrlich called her tweets “a surprise.”)
